GENERAL INFORMATION
The Istanbul Summer Program is a two-week intensive held at Klasik Turk Sanatlar Vakfi in Uskudar, Istanbul, June 23 – July 5, 2024. Klasik Turk Sanatlar Vakfi is housed in a renovated Mevlevihanesi (Historic Building) and is dedicated to studying the Islamic arts. The classroom walls are covered with original calligraphy, tezhip, ebru, and miniature artwork that inspires reverence for the arts and the One they praise.
The old city on the European (Fatih and Eyup) and Asian (Uskudar and Beykoz) sides are considered an open-air museum for Islamic arts; however, Uskudar has more classes, foundations, galleries, etc., exhibitions dedicated to the Islamic arts than any other borough of Istanbul. Moreover, the Mayor of Uskudar, Hilmi Turkmen, is a dedicated art patron.
We will be in the Aziz Mahmud Hudai and Mimar Sinan neighborhoods of Uskudar, with everything you need within walking distance. You can also use electric scooters to get around. We advise you to stay local regardless of 4 and 5-star accommodations.
Before you arrive, we will provide recommendations for helpful apps, the best restaurants and cafes, and valuable stores.
Classes will be held with Fatma Hoca to provide an opportunity for his students to fulfill the in-person requirement for their studies. In addition, Fatma Hoca will also teach skills and techniques that do not translate well over Zoom.
Registration will cover only the program fees. We have suggestions for two local hotels (2 and 3 stars), and there are Airbnbs as well; however, participants are responsible for their accommodations and meals.
SCHEDULE
Classes will be held Monday-Friday, 10 AM-1 PM, and 2:30 PM to 5 PM. Fridays are dedicated to tours of the Old City, galleries, art supply shops, etc., and meetings with local master artists. Saturday and Sunday will be free for students.
Due to limited seating, we request you cancel by February 28, 2024, to receive a full refund.

ABOUT OUR INSTRUCTOR
Fatma Ulusoy Sirajuddin
Fatma Ulusoy Sirajuddin was born in Istanbul (b.1988) and graduated from European Islamic University Faculty of Islamic Sciences in 2012 and Anadolu University Open Education Faculty of Theology in 2016.
Fatma continued her education with her husband Shahryanshah Sirajuddin in Riq’a and Diwani scripts until 2015, when she decided to focus on illumination with Ayşe Gülcan Özbalak.
During the summer of the pandemic, Fatma Hoca joined the Deen Arts team and began teaching students the art of Islamic manuscript illumination, or tezhip. Fatma Hoca is fluent in Turkish and Malay. However, due to her exposure and engagement with English-speaking students, she has begun to comprehend the English language as her students learn Turkish in class.
Shahanshah Sirajuddin and Fatma Ulusoy Hocas continue to produce magnificent works of illuminated and calligraphy together in Istanbul.
